Innings Pitched Calculator

Convert box-score innings pitched notation — where .1 and .2 mean outs, not tenths — into true decimal innings and total outs.

Informational only — not a substitute for official league statistics or professional judgment.

How it's calculated

True innings = Whole innings + (Outs digit ÷ 3) Total outs = (Whole innings × 3) + Outs digit Example: 182.1 IP True innings = 182 + 1/3 ≈ 182.333 (182⅓) Total outs = 182 × 3 + 1 = 547

Assumptions

  • The digit after the point must be 0, 1, or 2 — the notation counts outs, so .3 and above don't exist.
  • Assumes three outs per inning (universal in baseball and softball).

Frequently asked questions

What does 5.1 or 5.2 innings pitched mean?

The digit after the point counts outs recorded in the unfinished inning, not tenths: 5.1 means 5 innings plus 1 out (5⅓ innings), and 5.2 means 5 innings plus 2 outs (5⅔ innings). There is no 5.3 — a third out completes the inning and rolls the total to 6.0.

How do I convert total outs into innings pitched?

Divide outs by 3: the quotient is the whole innings and the remainder is the digit after the point. For example, 29 outs = 9 innings with 2 outs left over, written as 9.2 IP (9⅔ innings).

Why does entering 6.1 straight into an ERA formula give the wrong answer?

Because 6.1 IP is really 6⅓ innings (about 6.333), not 6.1 innings. Treating the notation as a plain decimal understates the innings, which inflates ERA, WHIP, and any other per-inning rate. Convert to true decimal innings first — or use a calculator that does it for you.

Can a pitcher be credited with 0.0 innings pitched?

Yes. A pitcher who faces batters but records no outs is credited with 0.0 IP. Their rate stats become undefined or infinite for that outing, which is why box scores sometimes show "inf" or a dash for ERA after such an appearance.
