Shot accuracy measures one thing: whether a shot was on target, not whether it was a hard shot to make. A striker with a high shots-on-target percentage might just be facing more open nets from central positions, while a player with a lower percentage could be attempting shots from tighter angles against set defenses. The number tells you nothing about shot difficulty on its own.

What shot accuracy actually counts

By the industry-standard definition used across most professional data providers, shot accuracy is Shots on Target divided by Total Shots, multiplied by 100. A shot on target is defined as a deliberate attempt to score that is on target — this includes both goals scored and shots saved by the goalkeeper. A blocked shot, one that sails wide, or one that clears the bar does not count as on target, regardless of how much pressure the shooter faced.

That definition is doing a lot of work. Why the percentage can mislead

Consider two forwards who both post identical shot accuracy across a season. Forward A takes most of his shots from inside the six-yard box off cutbacks and rebounds, where defenders are often out of position and the goalkeeper's angle is already compromised. Forward B takes most of his shots from the edge of the box against a set defensive shape, under a closing center-back, with the goalkeeper squared up.

Both might land the same share of shots on target. But Forward B's shots represent a harder skill: hitting the target while under pressure and from a tougher angle. Forward A's identical percentage may simply reflect that his shots were easier to get on target in the first place, not that his finishing technique is superior.

This is the same trap that shows up across sports whenever a raw percentage hides the conditions behind it. In football, a quarterback's completion percentage can mask problems in the same way — a high number built on short, low-risk throws looks identical on the stat sheet to a number built on tougher, more valuable attempts. Reading accuracy in context

To get closer to actual finishing skill, compare shot accuracy across situations rather than in isolation. Break a player's shooting log into categories — shots from inside the box versus outside it, shots under pressure versus shots with space, shots against top-half defenses versus bottom-half ones. A player whose accuracy holds steady across all of those buckets is showing a repeatable skill. A player whose accuracy collapses once you isolate shots taken from distance or under pressure is likely benefiting from shot selection and service, not raw technique.

A worked example

Take a forward who finishes a match with 6 shots on target out of 10 total shots. Run that through the formula: 6 ÷ 10 × 100 = 60% shot accuracy. Now take a second forward who also posts 60% shot accuracy, but from 3 shots on target out of 5 attempts, all taken from outside the box against a compact low block. The percentage is identical. The underlying shooting profile is not. Without knowing shot location and pressure, the two 60% marks aren't telling you the same thing about who is the better finisher.

This is why shot accuracy works best as a screening tool rather than a final verdict. It flags players worth digging into further — those with unusually high or low marks — but the follow-up question always has to be about shot quality and opponent context, not the number by itself.

Pairing it with other numbers

Shot accuracy is more useful next to output stats like goals and assists per 90 minutes, since a player converting a high share of on-target shots into actual goals is showing something closer to true finishing quality than accuracy alone provides. It's also worth checking against team-level passing patterns — a team with a high pass completion percentage that also generates a lot of shots from central, high-value areas is creating the conditions for both stats to look strong for reasons that have little to do with individual shooting technique.
